More Than A Trim (2024)

Short Film / Documentary
In the UK, Black barbershops have long been more than places to get a trim—they’re cultural anchors. From West Indian shops in Brixton to African barbers in Birmingham, they’re trusted spaces where stories are shared, advice is given, and a sense of belonging is built. The rhythm of clippers often carries conversations that run far deeper than the haircut itself.
My portion of the documentary unfolds mid-haircut, in an intimate exchange between me and Dalston-based barber Mitch Fly. As owner of Fade Fabric Barbers and part of Islington’s “Young Black Men and Mental Health” initiative, Mitch is trained as a mental health first responder.
While shaping my hair, he speaks about spotting early signs of distress, listening without judgment, and guiding clients toward help. “We cut hair so much we hear so much,” he says. In that chair, our conversation becomes a living example of the barbershop as a space for care, resilience, and community healing.

'EMERGENCE - Sculpting my Inner Kaali', is a brief documentary (produced and directed by me) of the process behind my sculpture of the goddess 'Maa (Mother) Kaali'. The video captures my journey through the streets of Kolkata (India) exploring the sculptures of major studios to eventually creating my own, which brought in many inner realisations and shifts in the way I look at life.
